Does Webcelerate Accelerator work with Netscape? |
Yes. Webcelerate Accelerator works well with Netscape 4.7 or later. However, you'll first need to make some simple changes to your Netscape browser Preferences, specifically proxy server settings. A little background: As part of the acceleration process, Webcelerate Accelerator uses a "proxy server" on your computer. A proxy server is a local (meaning "on your computer") program that manages Web traffic to and from your browser. The following changes apply to Netscape version 6 [and 4.7]: Obtaining Webcelerate Accelerator's Port Number First, you need to determine the proxy port number that Webcelerate Accelerator is using. By default this number is 8080, however Webcelerate will assign another number if a port number conflict is detected during the installation process. Follow these steps to check the Webcelerate Accelerator proxy port number:
- If you have not already done so, download and install
Webcelerate Accelerator.
- Click the small blue Webcelerate
Accelerator icon (located in the taskbar by the system
clock).
- Click Options...
- Click Advanced...
- Note
the port
number. You will need this number to configure Netscape
to work with Webcelerate Accelerator.
- Click OK. Setting
Netscape's
HTTP Proxy Address and Port Number
Follow these steps to
set the Netscape HTTP proxy address and port number:
- Click on the Netscape Edit menu.
- Select Preferences...
- Double
click on the Advanced category.
- Click on Proxies.
- Click View [Netscape 4.7 only]
- Make
sure that the "Manual
proxy configuration" radio
button is selected. Important: If your system is already
using an HTTP proxy, write down the proxy name and its
corresponding port number and save the information. You
will need it if you ever stop using Webcelerate Accelerator.
- Click
in the HTTP Proxy area and enter localhost.
- Click
in the HTTP Port area and enter the Webcelerate
Accelerator
port number (by default 8080, but you should verify
this as described above).
- Click OK. Try accessing
your favorite Web sites; your Internet experience should
be
accelerated.
